The Naval Supply Activities (NSA Bahrain) needed to link their newly acquired sea side base extension to the old base. Problem… There is a major 6 lane highway in between. No tunneling practical, so the only solution a bridge. Disrupting traffic on the highway for a year or so while the bridge was built was not an option, so NSA pre-fabricated the unit off to one side. Mounted it on boogies as used by NASA for the space shuttle, closed the highway for one night and wheeled it across in place.
The look on the literally thousands of drivers who drove over the highway next morning – was absolutely classic. Virtually none of them seemed to have bothered to register any advanced notice of the event, so the bridge looming up in front of them came as a big shock. WIth each driver and passenger’s eyes gaping wide, one could almost read their lips and minds saying; ‘Hey wait a minute, that was not there the day before’.
